Surfing on Holmsland

Flat, shallow water in the fjord at Kloster and waves from the North Sea at Søndervig. Here are the wind and the sea right now.

The wind at the spot is shown here with live data from Open-Meteo. Data: Open-Meteo.com (opens in a new window)

The waterline below is drawn from wave height, wave period and sea level at Søndervig once the data has loaded.

Sea level and tide

The sea level is shown here once the live data has loaded.

Modelled, not measured, and not for navigation. The curve is Open-Meteo’s modelled sea level for the North Sea off Søndervig, relative to global mean sea level (not chart datum). It includes the tide and the effect of air pressure, and its accuracy is limited close to the coast.

The curve applies to the sea, not the fjord. Ringkøbing Fjord lies behind the lock at Hvide Sande, so the sea’s tide does not reach Kloster.

Kloster Surfspot

The spot is in the north-western part of Ringkøbing Fjord, by Baggersvej. The shallow water makes it one of the area’s favourite places for kitesurfing.

Address
Baggersvej, 6950 Ringkøbing, on the road between Søndervig and Ringkøbing
Best wind
WNW and ESE. NW, N and E give offshore wind of varying quality.
The water
Completely flat and shallow up to 2 km out into the fjord.
Watch out
Fishing-net poles and other kites. The way in and out is narrow.
Rigging
A good grassy area, but a relatively small space. Be considerate of the other visitors on the beach.
Facilities
Parking (somewhat limited in high season), toilet, tables and benches, a hut for your packed lunch, and a barbecue.
Windsurfing
The sources disagree: VisitVesterhavet says it can be done, but that the water level is better towards the south-east. Westwind says the spot is not suitable for windsurfing because there is a lot of seagrass.

Sources: VisitVesterhavet: Kloster Surfspot (opens in a new window) and Westwind’s spot guide to Ringkøbing Fjord (opens in a new window). Westwind generally advises keeping an eye out for fishing nets and net poles, swimmers, dogs, children and onshore wind on the fjord.
